“Life-threatening group B Strep infections in newborn
babies can usually be prevented – get informed and protect
your baby.”
says Dr Chris Steele |
Did you know that Group B Strep infection
in newborn babies is ...
- Relatively uncommon? (Without preventative action, in the UK
an estimated one in every 1,000 babies will develop group B Strep
infection – approximately 700 sick babies a year)
- Potentially devastating? (group B Strep infections
usually present as septicaemia, pneumonia and/or meningitis –
most babies are successfully treated and recover from their
infection but, sadly, one in ten will die and some survivors will
be left with long term problems)
- Usually preventable? (Giving antibiotics in labour
to women found to carry group B Strep during the
pregnancy or who have other identifiable risk factors
can prevent most of these infections in newborn
babies)
