Unfortunately, many busy healthcare professionals are unaware just how successful the preventative measures described on this website have been proven to be. You can help change this by:·
- Make sure local health professionals have copies of our leaflets and posters
- GPs, midwifes, local hospitals maternity services (antenatal clinics, labour wards, SCBUs etc.) and health visitors
- displaying the GBSS posters where pregnant women will see them (not only in medical environments, but also mother & toddler groups, crèches, nurseries, etc)
- making the introductory 'GBS & Pregnancy' leaflets available to all pregnant women
- Make sure local hospital's policy on preventing GBS infection in newborn babies is appropriate
- if it's the same as ours, great!
- if it's different, then what evidence/research has been used in putting together the policy? We're always keen to make sure GBSS's recommendations are as up to date as possible, so we'd be interested to see any research/evidence which demonstrates that an alternative approach is better
- Write to or make an appointment to see your local MP about GBS
- GBSS believes that
- every pregnant woman should be given information on GBS every pregnancy
- every pregnant woman should be offered a reliable test for GBS colonisation at 35-37 weeks of pregnancy free of charge (and, until these tests are freely available, all pregnant women should be told how to get these tests privately)
- every pregnant woman identified as carrying GBS, or who has had a baby with GBS disease, or where other recognised risk factors are present should be offered intravenous antibiotics in labour
- Ask your MP how he/she can help this happen.
