Group B Strep Awareness

Awareness saves lives. Group B Strep Support wants every relevant health professional in the UK to be fully informed about how most group B streptococcal (GBS) infections in newborn babies can be prevented. And we want every pregnant woman also to be fully informed about GBS, so she can - in conjunction with her health professionals - decide what is best for her and her baby.

We regularly:

  • send packs of information and display materials relating to group B Strep to maternity units around the country
  • obtain high profile media coverage in many pregnancy & birth and women's magazines, in journals and in newspapers
  • ensure TV and radio coverage

What can I do to help?

  • Help raise awareness by putting up posters in your local clinics, surgeries, antenatal clinics and anywhere that pregnant women will see them - send us your details here to be sent posters (please send us your full postal address, including your postcode).
  • Check your local hospital will put up a GBS display - if you would like a display pack to take to your local hospital to put up, send us your details here (please send us your full postal address, including your postcode).
  • Write to your MP to raise the issues with them and to tell them about the petition - click here to download a letter template and here for the latest Background Briefing Paper to send with your letter (and please let us know how you get on). If you don't know who your MP is, you can find out at this website.
  • Contact your local newspapers, radio and TV stations and tell them about what you're doing to raise awareness of GBS in your area. You can download some tips on speaking to the media and a press release which you can alter to describe your activities by clicking here.
  • Raise money to support the work of GBSS - send us your details here to be sent a fundraising pack (please send us your full postal address, including your postcode).
  • Tell us your ideas of how to help - we'd love to hear from you and to help you raise more awareness!
